O akci

Matematický seminář Pedagogické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity přivítá prof. Dirka de Bocka z Faculty of Economics and Business, KU Leuven v Belgii. Přednáška se zaměří na vznik a vývoj moderní matematiky (New Math) ve světě, její klíčové charakteristiky a důvody, proč se nakonec tento reformní přístup neujal. Během semináře bude nejprve představen vznik hnutí v 50. letech 20. století v kontinentální Evropě i USA, následně budou rozebrány konkrétní reformy z 60. a počátku 70. let. Závěr se bude věnovat rychlému úpadku tohoto směru od poloviny 70. let. Ačkoli moderní matematika nebyla jednoznačným úspěchem, položila základy pro další vývoj matematiky a jejího vzdělávání, který by bez ní pravděpodobně nevznikl.

How did modern mathematics/New Math emerge and develop worldwide (and ultimately fail)?

Modern mathematics (or New Math) refers to a rather short but drastic change in the way mathematics was understood and taught in Europe, in the United States of America, and in various other countries around the globe. In this talk, we focus first on the origins in the early 1950s of this reform movement, both in continental Europe and in the US. Second, we review and illustrate some characteristics of the reforms of the 1960s and early 1970s. Finally, we discuss the rapid decline of the movement that began in most countries from the mid-1970s. Modern mathematics was by no means an overall success, but it was at the root of developments in mathematics education that probably would not have occurred without it.
